Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe (b. Vejle 1882, d. Dresden 1931)

“Pont Neuf”. View from the Seine in Paris towards the Pont des Arts and with Pont Neuf and Notre Dame in the background. Signed Einar Wegener. Oil on cardboard. 46×55 cm.

The painting has for some reason always been registered under the title “Pont Neuf”, even though the motif is Pont des Arts.

The known Danish art dealer Ole Haslund hosted the last joint exhibition with Gerda and Einar Wegener's works. It took place at Haslund's art gallery on Østergade in Copenhagen. It was February 1931 - after Einar the previous year had had a number of groundbreaking gender reassignment operations in Germany.

Among the works on display was one of Einar Wegener's final paintings, done the year before his operations. Supreme Court Attorney Karl Oskar Fich purchased the painting “Pont Neuf” (1929) at the exhibition for 400 Danish kroner. Fich served, in connection with Einar's sex change and the dissolution of Lili and Gerda's marriage, as the couple's legal advisor.

At the exhibition in Østergade, where there were many paintings to choose from, Karl Oscar Fich immediately fell in love with the painting “Pont Neuf”, since he had once himself lived in the neighbourhood near the bridge, and he loved and missed Paris.

The painting was hung on the wall above the sofa in the study in the attorney's large apartment on Strandboulevarden in Copenhagen. There it hung for many years, where it every day reminded Karl Oskar Fich of his two remarkable clients.

“Pont Neuf” has been in Karl Oscar Fich's family for several generations, and its background story will have a prominent place in a forthcoming book about the Wegener couple by author Nikolaj Pors (Gyldendal Publishing).
